Finally a good news for all YouTube TV users, Tech Giant Google has finally added 5.1 audio support on Google TV, Android TV, and Roku devices. Now you can Surround sound with this new 5.1 audio support to your streams.

Nearly a year ago, YouTube TV announced a plan to add surround sound support for its streaming TV package. Surround sound has only been available on Cast-based Chromecasts and “Samsung + LG + Vizio devices with Cobalt 20 or higher” over the past year. The Google TV, Android TV, and Roku 5.1 audio expansion start “rolling out this week.”

YouTube TV made an announcement regarding this on its official Twitter handle. The tweet said that

This is just in 🔈─────────────⚪️🔊 We know you've been waiting, and it’s *finally* ready. 5.1 Audio is rolling out this week across Google TV, Android TV, and Roku devices.

This feature will now work on Google TV via the Chromecast device, the Roku, and its Fire technology. It will also be coming to Android TV that can get its updates on the air. The audio experience will run independently of the YouTube TV experience.

According to the YouTube TV support page, You can watch some YouTube TV programs with 5.1 surround sound when using the app on a compatible TV device.  As long as your device and set-up meet the requirements, you’ll automatically get 5.1 audio whenever it’s available for the program you’re watching.

YouTube TV 5.1 audio requirements

According to the YouTube TV support page, To get immersive sound, you’ll need:
  • The YouTube TV app is installed on your device.
    • Note: The app must be running Cobalt version 20 or higher. Learn how to check the Cobalt version for your TV.
  • A compatible TV device.
    • Samsung + LG + Vizio devices with Cobalt 20 or above
    • Traditional Chromecasts
    • Android TV
    • Google TV
    • Roku
  • A compatible speaker system.
  • Programs that support 5.1 audio.

Open the YouTube TV app on your TV, and play a video > Go to the player controls, then select More > Select the bug > Stats for nerds will be displayed on top of the video while the video is playing> If surround sound is available for the program you’re watching, you’ll see AC-3/EAC-3 listed in the Codecs section.
